Bassano in Teverina is the kind of village that still keeps its own rhythm. The bell tower marks the hours, neighbours stop to talk on the steps, and at the end of a lane of tufa-stone houses a teal gate opens onto Villa delle Due Sorelle.
Inside, the cottage is deliberately not modern. Ceilings are beamed in chestnut, the floors are terrazzo, and the furniture was sourced piece by piece: a carved dresser, a gilt mirror, a writing desk with its original inlay. Crane-patterned wallpaper wraps the first bedroom; a painted fan hangs above the bed in the second. It is eclectic, characterful and comfortable rather than uniform.
Life here happens outside. The antique kitchen sits just off the portico, so cooking and eating flow onto the long table under the white-painted roof. Beyond it, the garden steps down past lavender to a fire pit with four chairs, and to the hot tub, which is open all year and faces the hills.
The house suits couples and slow travellers who like atmosphere and privacy. Orte station is a short drive away for fast trains to Rome, Florence and beyond, and the villages, vineyards and gardens of Tuscia, Umbria and southern Tuscany are all within an easy day.

A long table under a timber roof, open on one side to the garden. Breakfast, lunch and the last glass of the evening all happen here.
