The road to the villa leaves the tarmac for ninety seconds of private track through the olives, and then the view opens: mountains, valley, the rooftops of Ciminna, and on a clear day the sea. The house sits on six acres of olive, fig, almond and plum trees, with nothing around it but the landscape.
It is built as two apartments, one above the other, which is what makes it work so well for families and groups. Everyone has their own space; everyone meets again on the pool terrace. Each floor has its own kitchen and living room, so two families can share the house without sharing every meal.
Below ground is the part guests talk about most. A full gym with a climbing wall, a Finnish dry sauna, a pool table, a workspace and a screening room occupy a basement the size of the house itself. Outside, a trampoline waits under the trees.
Ciminna, a short drive below, stood in for the fictional town of Donnafugata in Visconti’s film of The Leopard. Palermo, Monreale and Caccamo are comfortable half-day trips; Cefalù and the coast a full, happy day.

Ciminna is a hill town of around three thousand people in the mountains south-east of Palermo. In 1962 Luchino Visconti filmed much of The Leopard here; the town’s mother church became the church of the fictional Donnafugata, and the townspeople appeared as extras.
